2007

2007 brought us a number of "broken Pyrs".  Great Pyrenees who have ended up in the shelters either as owner surrenders or as strays, needing more than the usual medical attention we are accustomed to such as updates and/or initial shots, worming meds, spay or neuter surgery.  Without SPIN these dogs would surely have been lost - SPIN turns away no dog regardless of age, physical condition or medical needs.

As of August, here is the list of some of the medical needs SPIN has encountered.  With the help of the wonderful vets in the DFW area, they are now recovered.

***************************************************************
Cassanova had a gun shot wound which required surgery.

Roscoe had a broken leg. Despite our vets best efforts, his leg was beyond repair and Roscoe joined the Tripod Club.  He has adjusted well and does not realize he is "different".

Hope also suffered a leg injury that was too severe to save the limb and as of this writing is scheduled to have a front leg amputated, so she too will join the not-so-exclusive Tripod Club as well.  Dogs are amazingly resilient and we expect her to be up and on her paws in no time at all.
Both Dave and Wesley had leg surgery to repair a growth plate which was damaged from a previous trauma.

Miss Priss had surgery, then needed a biopsy for warts on her belly.

Rommel came to us pretty lumpy.  As he is a senior, there were serious concerns about his health.  Our vets removed and biopsied cysts from all over his body.  He is doing okay for a gentleman of his age.

Murray was hit by a truck.  First his shattered femur needed repair, then his hip was dislocated from the accident so he had FHO surgery done.

Pauline had OCD surgery on her front leg.

Joannie is our miracle girl with her diaphragm surgery.  See her story at:

Big Daddy has made various trips to the doggie allergist.  He is allergic to cats, among other things. See his story at:

SPIN also fought many cases of nasty upper respiratory infections which required extensive (and expensive) medications.  Kennel cough or canine influenza abound this year, maybe from all the rain in the area.

For SPIN this has been a year of tragedy and sadness mingled with our triumphs and success stories.  We lost 4 of our fosters to Distemper and another 4 to Parvo - both completely preventable diseases if pups are immunized at the proper age.  Sadly for those lives lost, the people who were originally responsible for the pups being at all were not responsible enough to see they were protected against these diseases.  The pups did know the loving touch of SPIN before leaving this world but that is a very small touch of gladness to a totally preventable sadness.  We were able to save 3 of the 7 pups that were infected by the Parvovirus, but not without much worry and fear for their survival and many tears and prayers.

We also lost a beautiful boy, Papa.  Dear Papa came to SPIN already in his senior years and he quickly touched the heart of everyone of us who met him either in person or simply in picture.  Papa was one of the lucky ones, he was adopted by a wonderful woman and lived out the rest of his years in comfort and surrounded by love.  We were all saddened by his passing but said our good-byes to him with full hearts.  Papa was a true SPIN success story.  http://spinrescue.org/memorials/papa

Without a doubt every SPINner has reveled in the successes we have had this past year, placing these glorious Big White Dogs in loving and caring homes - giving them a chance at a wonderful new life.  And also without a doubt every SPINner has shed a tear for those lost and will carry a small hole in their hearts where each dear soul dwelled for much too short a time.

SPIN is comprised of an all volunteer army of caring, giving, dedicated individuals. Most of our efforts on behalf of the dogs are made possible by the generous donations we have received throughout the year. These donations have helped us greatly to produce some of the miracles you have read about above. Even the valiant efforts made to help those who were eventually called home by the angels were made possible to a great extent by these benefactors. To all of those who have so graciously and generously aided us by their donations we send our heart felt gratitude and thanks - and the dogs send drooly, sloppy, wonderful Big White Dog kisses and Pyr Paw hugs.
